Royal Festival Hall event
Friday, 12 April 2024

On Wednesday 13th March, we held our landmark 400th Anniversary event at the prestigious Royal Festival Hall. The greatly anticipated event featured an exceptional array of musical talent from 475 current students and over 70 alumni, as well as captivating acting and poetry, with over 2,300 people in attendance including parents, alumni and staff, both past and present.

From the outset, there was palpable excitement at the prospect of the evening to follow particularly in such a special venue, as expressed by Jill Dunn, class of 1953 (1946 joiner). "I thought it was marvellous for the national treasure that is the Latymer School to be holding its great moment in the beautiful national treasure that is the Royal Festival Hall." This was a feeling that also resonated with Year 7 student Olga, as she commented "It was really exciting to see students, parents and alumni watching us and just a very special experience to sing in such a place.

The event kicked off with a warming speech from Ms Cobbett, outlining the history, uniqueness and longevity of the Latymer School and its community. This was then followed by a spectacular evening of music, with students from Year 7 to 13 performing a wide variety of pieces, including classical, jazz, and contemporary pieces. These pieces proved to be a roaring success, with many congratulations to music staff and performers for their dedication and commitment to ensuring such outstanding quality throughout.

The audience was also treated to some entertaining musical theatre pieces performed by both the Junior and Senior musical theatre groups, as well as a poem, which thoughtfully articulated the theme of legacy, read by Year 12 student Kwame, winner of the 400th anniversary poetry competition.

In addition to this, the Latymer School was able to call upon passionate former students, with two alumni choir groups reuniting to perform pieces at the event. These were the hugely successful Madrigal Group from the 1970s who returned to mark the 50th anniversary of their US tour, along with an Alumni Chamber Choir, created specifically for the occasion.

As well as reflecting on the past, there was also an exciting look to the future with Ms Cobbett announcing the launch of a large library extension project, which will foster a new inclusive learning environment as well as honouring the heritage of our existing 1930s library. The evening fittingly concluded with a stirring rendition of the school song, performed by both students and the audience, a magnificent way to bring a truly special evening for all involved to a close. This sentiment was felt by Year 7 student Kheya, who wonderfully summed up the occasion. "The event at the Royal Festival Hall was a very memorable experience and one in which we were extremely lucky to take part. I'm really glad I joined in this year!

As commented Jamie Bolden, class of 1999 and Chair of the Latymer Foundation, "a massive congratulations to all performers and staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the event did indeed become the landmark occasion that will forever live in the memories of all involved!"
